A standout point guard in college, Miller was a four-year letterwinner at North Carolina State (1998-2002) under Herb Sendek where he earned his bachelor's degree in 2002. It's not uncommon that players ask to reopen the recruiting process after a coaching change.
The Indiana Hoosiers selected former Dayton coach Archie Miller as their next head coach.
As Glass introduced Miller for the first time, he turned to his new coach and said, "I've got to say, Archie, after observing your first team meeting, I'm even more confident than ever that you're the right guy for us".
"But inside-out is the theme, and I think if you start with the past, you deal with our current, and you work that hard at those three levels, I think you can deliver all what we want because it's been done before". "If you like the neighborhood, then you come".
An hour after the press conference formally introducing Miller as the new IU basketball head coach, Miller sat in the upper level suites of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on his cell phone.
Sources indicated Miller has long coveted the Ohio State job, where he was an assistant under Thad Matta from 2007 to 2009.
The scene wasn't lost on Miller.
That's a mindset that would benefit a Miller-coached player on the offensive end, too.
Miller is well-versed in the traditions of the sport. He is Arizona coach Sean Miller's brother. While I understand these are just two recent instances, the adage that defense wins championships remains consistent in college basketball on a yearly basis.
Archie Miller attended N.C. State and played there for four years, but when its coaching job became available, the Dayton coach said no thank you.More news: NCAA tournament: Badgers' blue collars better than blue chippers
Miller, 38, spent six seasons leading Dayton's program, posting a 139-63 record, and guided the Flyers to four straight NCAA tournament appearances.
Miller also says that he's dedicated to recruiting in IN and keeping the best high school players here.
Athletic director Fred Glass wasn't surprised by what he heard - or the warm reaction from fans.
There's a new king of Assembly Hall.
"I'm in touch with some people", he wrote in an email, "so I can say I'm waiting to see what's gonna to happen". "It's how I grew up", Miller said.
IN might not be good in 2017-18, just like Sean's first Arizona team wasn't good.
University of Dayton President Eric F. Spina said, "Although the University is saddened by Archie's departure, we are grateful for his tenacity and the support he provided our student-athletes on and off the court". Square pegs eventually went into round holes through the reworking and effort of Miller.
The Hoosiers alumni watched as such players as Zak Irvin, Gary Harris, Trevon Bluiett, Mitch McGary and so many others chose to go elsewhere while IU went scouring the nation in search of another Victor Oladipo miracle. Glass and Miller, obviously, are hoping they give IN and its new coach a chance, too. Miller has the opportunity to come in and right the wrongs of the Hoosiers, and keep in in the tournament consistently, which is so immensely important for their fan base.
"Our former players and our fans have to look at our program like it's being run at a high-class, high standard", he said.
"He later made his intentions clear to ESPN's Jeff Goodman, saying, "I am absolutely 100 percent not going to Indiana".
