There are just enough amusing lines in the film to give some comic relief to lighten the action. The movie feels as if it has been made for a 10-year-old kid, either the one living in your house or the one living in your heart.
Of course, "Skull Island" is also a follow-up to Gareth Edwards' 2014 "Godzilla", which set in motion the so-dubbed "MonsterVerse", a brand new cinematic universe from Legendary Entertainment, which recently acquired the rights to classic movie monsters like Godzilla, King Kong, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. The year is 1973, Nixon is pulling troops out of Vietnam and American explorer Bill Randa (John Goodman) has convinced a senator (Richard Jenkins) to bankroll a quick expedition on the way out to an uncharted South Pacific island where "myth and science meet". Brie Larson is an "anti-war photographer" who hitches a ride to document the journey. It seemed like I was always in a play that they wanted to have at the festival so I had the chance to do that too. Suffice to say that all that business about beauty killing the beast and side-excursions to New York City is off the table.

The real stars of the show here are the monsters and they come across pretty well. But if you're on the fence, stop reading now, and just go see it. More to the point, you root for the big, hairy lummox the way the movie wants you to.
