The year is 1973, Nixon is pulling troops out of Vietnam and American explorer Bill Randa (John Goodman) has convinced a senator (Richard Jenkins) to bankroll a quick expedition on the way out to an uncharted South Pacific island where "myth and science meet". Brie Larson is an "anti-war photographer" who hitches a ride to document the journey. It seemed like I was always in a play that they wanted to have at the festival so I had the chance to do that too. Suffice to say that all that business about beauty killing the beast and side-excursions to New York City is off the table.

"Kong: Skull Island" will be released into theaters nationwide this Friday, March 10th.

To further tantalise monster aficionados, there's a Marvel-style post-credits sting that hints at the next two films in the series: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs King Kong (2020). He can't make the mute, noble-savage-stereotypes of the island's human inhabitants any less offensive, but there's only so much one man can do.

The real stars of the show here are the monsters and they come across pretty well. But if you're on the fence, stop reading now, and just go see it. More to the point, you root for the big, hairy lummox the way the movie wants you to.
