Formally launched by CEO Satya Nadella at the Future Decoded conference in Mumbai earlier today, Microsoft has built a brand new version of Skype specifically for the needs of those living in India.
Skype Lite also shows the amount of data you've used, including a breakdown of Wi-Fi and cellular data usage, and how much data you've saved by using the Lite version of the app.
There's a growing population of Skype users in India, and Microsoft wants to capitalize on that with the launch of Skype Lite, a new app that's created to be more useful in that market. The Skype Lite app will be available to download from Google Play Store.
Having revealed a Skype bot developer programme past year, chatbots can be installed on to the app that so far range in the dozens from medical advice to games.
It also categorises the internet usage into two sections - the amount of mobile data or Wifi used while using the app.
The new Skype which will support seven Indian languages, is refurbished with an aim to change its functionality from computers to smartphones.More news: Negan Returns in First 'Walking Dead' Clip for 'Hostiles and Calamities'
The app will integrate seamlessly with India's controversial, cloud-connected national ID program started in 2010 called Aadhaar, which lets the government and authorized third-parties identify any one of India's 1.2 billion people using either a unique 12-digit identification number, fingerprints, or iris scans.
Skype Lite also comes bundled with a number of new features, including SMS filtering to help users remove promotional texts from their inbox.
Despite all that, if Microsoft wants to push this app, they need to improve the app in terms of the existing bugs as mentioned above and stability. While WhatsApp gives you an option to make either video or voice call, Skype Lite will straight away make the call to the desired contact. "So, its composability, in other words everything has to ultimately fit into a network model", said Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella. Microsoft said on Tuesday that Skype Lite would support Aadhaar authentication, pointing out to potential uses of the technology such as for verifying the identity of a candidate for a video job interview.
Microsoft has retooled Skype, the messaging service synonymous with business users, for people living in emerging markets.
