President-elect Donald Trump chose Michael Flynn, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general, to fill the role of assistant to the president for national security affairs. He held various positions in military intelligence throughout his career, including director of intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the top intelligence officer for the commander of the US -led worldwide military coalition in Afghanistan in 2009-10. The retired three-star general, a veteran of America's recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has courted controversy with extreme statements that critics say border on Islamophobia. But Trump did not reveal or indicate whether the 2012 Republican nominee could be in line for a cabinet post.
During the election campaign, Trump had implied that he was agreeable to the idea of a USA troop withdrawal from South Korea if Seoul does not assume the major share of the deployment cost.
As well as his military career and political ascension, Flynn also has a digital legacy that is problematic.

Pompeo, meanwhile, was elected in 2010 and serves on the House of Intelligence Committee and Energy and Commerce Committee.
Muslim Advocates, a civil rights group based in California, said in a statement that Flynn's appointment "signals support for anti-Muslim policies and sentiment that will undermine our nation's security and exacerbate an already unsafe climate for Muslims and all Americans".
They both believe that the United States needs to start working with Putin to defeat Islamist militants and stop worrying about his suppression of critics at home, it said.

In interview with The Washington Post earlier this year, Flynn dismissed any concerns over conflicts of interest.
"We have to work constructively with Russia", Flynn told the German magazine Der Spiegel past year.
A CNN story also found that Flynn regularly retweeted white nationalist and anti-Semitic accounts, shared and responded to news stories found to be fake, and disseminated conspiracy theories about both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Rep. Mike Pompeo, a House Republican from Kansas, will head the Central Intelligence Agency, and ret. After Harvard Law School, he returned to Kansas, and founded the company Thayer Aerospace, and served as its CEO for more than a decade providing components for commercial and military aircraft, according to his official bio. One of them is Congressman Schiff.

But, he's also a staunch supporter of another of Trump's most controversial policies: his proposed ban on Muslims.
