Rams coach Jeff Fisher notified Goff and Case Keenum, who was the team's starter for the first 10 weeks, of the switch on Tuesday morning. Case Keenum has a quarterback rating of 43.0 on the season, an absolutely putrid number.
Goff, 22, last started a game on December 29 of a year ago while with Cal in the Armed Foces Bowl against Air Force. He will line up against one of the best defensive players in the league in Ndamukong Suh, a player who will surely try and greet Goff to the NFL in the most vicious way possible.
After it hosts Miami, Los Angeles has two tough road games in New Orleans and New England before returning home to face Atlanta.
It remains to be seen how well Goff will perform, but at this point no one expects him to be worse than Keenum. "But it's time to move on".
The success of Goff will either carry or crush the Rams newly-relocated franchise, as well as the jobs of Fisher and general manager Les Snead.
The Rams' offense has been lifeless of late, in desperate need of a spark. Their passing game is ranked 25th with 225.4 yards per game, increasing in recent weeks because of Los Angeles' profound struggles running the ball. Weinke cited footwork as one of the trouble spots upon arrival for Goff, who was nearly exclusively a shotgun QB in college. He also was far from the only problem L.A. had.More news: Late turnover lifts Chiefs to 20-17 win over Panthers
Goff is the first quarterback chosen with the top pick who didn't start his team's opener since JaMarcus Russell in 2007. And Fisher said nothing on Monday to suggest that Fisher has decided Goff is ready. Goff comes out of a Cal system that ran an air raid offense in which he never had to communicate plays from the huddle, take a snap from under center or make so much as a third progression. "As hard as that is for me to say, he's earned that right".
This is a flawed offense. Kenny Britt and Brian Quick have combined for 1,114 receiving yards and six touchdowns while Tavon Austin has 39 receptions. "I'm just going to work hard and hopefully win".
"It wasn't a spontaneous decision", Fisher said.
It is widely known that when the Rams drafted Goff they did so with the intentions not to start the young man until they were either eliminated from playoff contention or he was ready. Los Angeles is hanging by a thread in the NFC West, but that's the least of their worries.
Certainly he'll have a say in how the Rams proceed, which makes the timing of starting him so intriguing.
But, according to Mortensen, the Rams don't expect Goff to be ideal.
